Action Items:
1. Approved the minutes and bills of the July 21 meeting.
2. Approved Resolution #9-2009 authorizing police car purchase at Koehn’s – Greenville, Michigan.
3. Approved Courters’ zoning variance at 304 W. Pine Street.
4. Approved City’s purchase of former Flower Garden at 201 N. Division for $1. Total costs of approximately $6,000 to include clearing title - $400, back taxes - $2,000, paperwork - $100, dumpsters - $2400, and prison/DPW labor and equipment - $1,000.
5. Approved City recreation plan through Fleis and VandenBrink, Engineering, Inc. for $2,500.
6. Approved monthly hard copy minutes provided in council packets for review.
Discussion Items:
1. Mayor Dan Herald stated he received many reports of gratitude for DPW’s fine work following the recent storms.
2. Fire Chief Dan Kipp reported on fire incidences for the month and that pumper #2 has been repaired.
3. Police Chief Jeff Hilliker reported on the police car grant of $9,000 recently approved for the $22,412 car. The City is to pay the first $27,000. New equipment for the car will also be purchased estimating $12,440 for light bar, camera, decals, hard drive to view tapes, and cage. Tasker stated that each year $5,000 is transferred to savings for police car purchase every five years. Police policy/procedure manual has been signed with changes. Taser training has been set for Sept. 2 with the county. Total monthly complaints up from last year at 57 total. Armed robberies have elevated in Montcalm County. CCPD is working more late nights due to surrounding gas station robberies. Officer Barbour was commended in a letter from a local doctor, and Councilman Grinnell stated he was very appreciative of Officer Beck’s assistance in a recent Crystal incident.
4. DPW Director Dan Curtis was absent.
5. Administrator Mark Borden reported on DPW as finishing retaining wall at 516 N. Williams, storm cleanup, and minor sucker truck repair is complete. Tasker commended DPW’s work at Grove Park and urged everyone to visit. Borden stated he met with a sign company to begin replacing street signs in the next few years.
